It's 1997 I’m 27, and I’m on stage at our company’s annual meeting...
All eyes are on me. It’s a high stakes moment. I take a deep breath and boldly declare from the podium,
Everyone laughs.
Little did they know, this audacious statement stemmed from a lifelong journey that shaped my mindset and prepared me for this very moment.
I was three years old when my grandparents moved to Florida and started an orthotics and prosthetics business. From four-years-old on, I spent summers with them, and my grandfather, Papa Jules, involved me in everything — deliveries, cleaning wheelchairs, observing sales calls. He asked me questions about everything in his business and took note of my answers, unknowingly shaping my future in the process.
I hustled from age seven — raking leaves, shoveling snow, delivering papers, working in a warehouse, washing dishes, busing tables, and being a barback in restaurants. (I still have the $115 bike I bought at 14 as a reminder of hard work’s value.)
From a young age, I was captivated by the idea of bringing concepts to life. As a kid, I dreamed of becoming an architect, drawing up plans and watching my designs turn into actual buildings. There was something magical about knowing that you could take the vision in your head and make it real.
I was 12 when my parents divorced, and by 16, still feeling angry, depressed and friendless, I wandered aimlessly into a bookstore at the mall. Drifting through the stacks, a self-hypnosis cassette on increasing confidence caught my eye. I’d never explored the self-help section before, but it felt like this tape was meant to find me. I bought it immediately.
For the next 30 nights, I secretly listened to that tape, and it helped tremendously. It was the first time I realized the real power of the mind. I learned young that whatever we can envision, we can create in real life. It’s not magic, but it is possible with the right mindset and approach. (And yes, I still listen to recordings every night to cultivate an empowered mindset).
It’s 1997, and I’m standing on that stage, having just declared my outrageous goal for the new division. The EVP of Sales and Marketing, Mark, is steaming mad.
He says to me afterwards, “What the hell did you commit to? This is a 50-year-old $68 million plastics packaging company, and you’re up there saying you’re going to turn a brand new division into the largest in the company in just five years… What were you thinking?!”
“Mark… I see it, so I can achieve it,” I reply, undeterred.
Six months later, I hadn’t closed a single deal, and Mark has definitely noticed. “How about you SEE closing a deal sometime soon?”
“Mark, I’m building relationships. Don’t worry. By the end of the year, I’ll have over $2 million in revenue.”
“You better effing hope so,” Mark shoots back.
And I did.
By the year’s end, I secured $2.4 million in revenue. And within two years, $22 million. Driven by the vision I had planted in my mind, I achieved the seemingly impossible – within five years, my division became the largest at $45 million in revenue.
That was the first time I grew a big business. I left that company and, as President/CEO, I built a brand new $10 million dollar portrait studio franchise next.
There was a reason I could grow two 8-figure businesses in 5 years each… the lessons from Papa Jules and my early hustle had prepared me for this success.
After growing those businesses, I realized my dream of becoming a speaker, even speaking for the person who first inspired me years ago — Tony Robbins. Business owners loved that I was a proven leader who could “hot seat” their challenges and generate million-dollar ideas on the spot.
…On a plane ride to Las Vegas, I found myself sitting next to a very successful speaker. We got chatting and he challenged me to share some marketing ideas for his business, which I did right there. From then on he was referring business to me; it became my side hustle.
In 2012 I decided it was time to turn my side-hustle into a full-time business. Business Nitrogen already had lots of clients, it was time to give it a team and my dedicated focus.
Today… I do two things. I speak to business audiences around the world helping them grow their teams, culture, sales, and their marketing. I also run Business Nitrogen, a growth-marketing consultancy. We have a great team of twenty plus and growing.
I’ll never forget that moment when everyone laughed as I stated my seemingly impossible goal from the stage all those years ago. What they didn’t know is what I learned young from Papa Jules and that self-help tape:
If you can see it vividly in your mind and truly believe it’s achievable, you can breathe life into that vision.
That audacious belief, shaped by a lifetime of experiences and lessons, drove me to achieve the seemingly impossible then, and continues to propel me forward now. It’s why I find so much passion and purpose in the work I do — helping entrepreneurs manifest the visions they have for their business, bringing them to life.
My purpose is to share the strategies that allowed me to scale multiple 8-figure businesses, so other entrepreneurs can monetize and grow their companies without burning out.
If you’re ready to create exponential growth, to take the grand vision you see for your business and make it a reality, I invite you to join me.
Together, we can defy the doubters and achieve your audacious goals.
